What is the $5,000 rule for HVAC?

A rule of thumb for deciding whether to repair or replace: multiply the repair cost by the age of the unit in years, and if the result comes to more than five thousand dollars, replace rather than repair. A four hundred dollar repair on a fifteen-year-old unit works out at six thousand, so you replace.

It is a rough guide rather than an engineering standard. It ignores efficiency losses, refrigerant type, and how close the unit is to a compressor failure. But it is the calculation most operators have heard of, and as a first filter it is reasonable.

Is it cheaper to run air conditioning all day or turn it off and on?

For most commercial spaces, setting back beats switching off. A full shutdown lets the building mass and the humidity drift far enough that the recovery costs more than the idle running saved, and that is especially true in a kitchen or anywhere else with a high latent load.

A moderate setback during closed hours, with recovery timed to finish before opening, captures most of the saving without paying the recovery penalty. Getting that timing right every day is what schedule and occupancy aware control automates, and it is why a thermostat someone remembers to adjust saves considerably less than the same thermostat on a schedule.

How does occupancy-based HVAC control actually save money?

By not conditioning space nobody is in, and by not overshooting when they arrive. ACWise reads footfall patterns at the site and adjusts to occupancy and weather rather than holding one setpoint all day, which Renergy reports cutting energy costs by up to twenty-five per cent.

Footfall is read from presence and motion detection at the site, not a manual count or a point-of-sale feed, so the system knows a space is occupied in real time rather than on a lag.

Are there rebates for commercial HVAC control upgrades?

Often, but rarely as an off-the-shelf rebate. Controls projects usually go through a custom or engineered track, where you are paid on measured savings rather than a fixed amount per unit.

In Ontario, the IESO Save on Energy Retrofit Program covers HVAC control measures in its prescriptive stream, including advanced rooftop unit controls and demand control ventilation. Its Custom stream pays $1,800 per kW or $0.20 per kWh, whichever is higher, up to 50% of eligible project costs. The program is revised twice a year, so confirm current terms before you budget against them.

In California, the investor-owned utilities (PG&E, Southern California Edison and SDG&E) run business rebate catalogues alongside custom retrofit programs, and controls work generally lands in the custom track rather than the standard catalogue.

In New York it is NYSERDA plus your utility. National Grid's Energy Management Systems program pays based on the number of new control points that save energy, Con Edison runs a commercial and industrial efficiency program, and NYSERDA's own advice is to ask your utility about custom programs when a measure is not on the standard list.

Can one system control HVAC across several locations?

Yes, and it is the main thing separating ACWise from a smart thermostat. One account covers every location, so you see what each site is doing and set them from one place instead of logging into each building in turn.

That is the point at which single-site smart thermostats stop being enough. A chain running forty stores does not have a thermostat problem, it has a forty-thermostats problem, and the cost of it is invisible until someone adds up what every site is doing overnight.

Schedules and setpoints can be pushed to every site in one action, and sites can be grouped, so a chain can change every location at once and still make exceptions at the site or group level when it needs to.

Will it work with the HVAC I already have?

Yes. Renergy supports most commercial HVAC, including centralised systems, split systems and VRF, and works with your existing units rather than requiring replacement.

That keeps this out of capital budget territory. You are adding control and visibility to equipment that stays exactly where it is.

What causes an HVAC unit to short cycle?

Usually an oversized unit, a dirty filter or coil, low refrigerant, a failing capacitor or contactor, or a thermostat sensing the wrong air.

It matters beyond comfort. Short cycling drives up energy use and wears the compressor, which is the expensive part to replace, and it is visible in runtime data well before anyone notices the room is uncomfortable.

My commercial air conditioning is running but not cooling. What does that mean?

Most often a refrigerant charge problem, a dirty or iced evaporator coil, a failed compressor contactor, or blocked condenser airflow.

The question that separates them is whether the unit is blowing air that is simply not cold, or barely blowing at all. The first points at refrigerant or the compressor; the second at airflow, a filter, a coil or a fan. Check the filter and the condenser coil before calling anyone, because a surprising share of no-cooling calls end there.
